How to host a simple coffee morning without fancy equipment

Use the brewer you already own, pick a start and end time, set out cups, water and something small to eat, and invite a few people. A coffee morning is about the time together, not the equipment.

What you actually need

  • One way to make coffee: a drip machine, pour-over, French press or espresso machine all work
  • Enough cups for everyone, plus one or two spares
  • Water, and milk or sugar if your guests take them
  • Somewhere to sit, even if it’s the kitchen counter
  • A start time and a rough end time

A simple plan for the morning

  1. 01

    The day before

Send a reminder, check you have coffee and enough cups, and clear one surface for a coffee station.

  2. 02

    Thirty minutes before

Set out cups, spoons, milk and sugar. Get your brewer ready so the first pot can start as people arrive.

  3. 03

    When people arrive

Brew the first round, point people to the cups and let them help themselves. A self-serve station frees you to talk.

  4. 04

    Halfway through

Offer a second round. If someone wants iced coffee, pour fresh coffee over a full cup of ice.

  5. 05

    Wrapping up

Ending on time is a gift to your guests. Thank people for coming, and if it was fun, mention the next one.

Brewing for more than two

Brew the way you normally do and simply make more than one round. Batch brewers and large French presses help, but a single pour-over brewed a few times works too. Brew a little earlier than you think, so you aren’t at the counter the whole time.

Keep it small the first time

Three or four people is plenty. Small groups are easier to host and easier to talk in. You can always open the door wider next time.
